Nuala saw the scene unfold like some terrible made-for-TV movie that should never have been made but was somehow coming to horrible vivid life right in front of her.

John held his rifle on McCree while no fewer than four rifles had him in their sights.

Nuala knew that if John succeeded in killing McCree, he would do it at the cost of his own life.

A truly terrible plan.

“That’s enough!” A strong voice called out from the fringe of the crowd.

Nuala turned to see Terry and Jill Donaghue standing shoulder to shoulder on the back of the wagon as if they’d just materialized there. Man and wife held bows with arrows drawn and notched.

Both were aimed at Lorcan McCree.

“Stand down or die here today,” Terry said, his eye looking down the sightline of his bowstring. His hand rock solid on the bow.

“Are you mad?” Sean Dolan yelled out. He didn’t lower his gun but pivoted to point it at the couple.

“That boy you have in your sights is Mike Donovan’s stepson,” Terry said between his teeth. “Mike is the true leader of this community!” Terry looked around the crowd until he spotted someone he knew.

“Sean Dolan,” Terry said, “Mike brought you and your wife into the fold six years ago when you were starving with no place to go! Will you be the one to tell him you shot his son? I promise if you hurt that lad, Mike will track you down to your dying day and sure you know he will.”

“Mike Donovan’s dead!” Riley O’Meara said.

“Maybe he is and maybe he isn’t,” Terry said. “But Lorcan McCree definitely is if any of you takes a single shot at John Woodson.”

“You can’t shoot us all, Donaghue!”

“No, but I’ll get you, O’Meara. On that ye may be sure.”

“Shoot any of us and I’ll shoot you, Donaghue,” McGoldrick said.

“Aye,” Jill said, turning her bow and arrow until it pointed to a beautiful young girl standing in the front of the crowd. “And I’ll kill your beautiful Beth with one straight to her heart. Test me if ye don’t think I will.”

A gasp of horror emitted from the crowd and the girl squeaked out, “Da!”

McCree raised his voice over the crowd noise. “Well sure this has gone arse over tits in a hurry,” he said with a laugh, obviously trying to break the mood. “Gentlemen—and ladies—put your weapons down. They’ll be no shooting of anyone today.” He turned to O’Meara. “Your rifle down, Mr. O’Meara, if ye please.”

O’Meara reluctantly lowered his gun but Terry, John and Jill kept their weapons pointed.

“Since it’s clear ye don’t want to belong to this community any longer,” McCree said to Terry, “and because I have happy news to share and don’t wish it poisoned by a wee massacre first…” He smiled at Fiona. “…I’ll tell you now what I’d already intended to announce before young John went off half cocked.”

He waved to the two men holding the archers and they began to untie them—Kyla included.

“The archers are welcome to leave unharmed if they walk away right now.
